Album Review

After a brief hiatus, LOST SPHERE PROJECT (LSP) have returned with a brand new EP. Considering the amount of tracks on the album, though, this could very well be much more than just an EP, which usually features only about 7 tracks. Since their debut album, the band has gotten a bit better at creating technical “chaos Grindcore” that is more than just a bunch of noise. This is the kind of stuff that grabs attention the way NAPALM DEATH did when they appeared back in the late 80s/ early 90s. Lots of the music here is actually pretty even paced, sounding more like strong deathcore than Grindcore, such as ‘Ice Mike’, which is full of layered groove riffs with the guitars, appropriate pauses for the drums, and visceral vocals that are guttural but somewhat understandable. Other tracks like ‘Vultures Of Conscience’ are more like the full blown Grindcore one knows: full of noise with little pauses and just explosions all around of sound, from the rapid blast beats to the weight of the vocals and guitar work combined, hurling with such force. It is most likely though that fans will choose the technical tracks over the all out chaotic ones.

Like most Grindcore albums, ‘Third Level To Internal Failure’ will go by pretty quick because the tracks themselves can be pretty brief. Insidious music can only be taken in small doses. Only two of the tracks are more than two minutes, with the rest just tearing through with no remorse as fast as possible. However, when it comes to the guitar virtuoso work on something like ‘Paradoxical Sights’, one has to admit that it is short but sweet delivery. There is also a remix of an earlier track, but instead of being a complete techno or industrial remix - as many might expect – ‘Cetaceans Rippers’ sounds like a rough demo piece with a faded sound - especially with the vocals -, much how like BLOODBATH did their ‘Breeding Death’ track on ‘Nightmares Made Flesh’. There a few catchy electronic beats here and there, but mostly it is the original track all over again with maybe a few added samples here and there. Still, it’s a welcome revamp of LSP’s focus to keep being experimental, and the entire album itself sounds as violently powerful as ever. It’s a great step in the right direction, and those who appreciate a mix of death metal and Grindcore rather than just sheer senseless Noisecore will find this bearable… until the ferocity of it all breaks one’s mind down.
