Album Review

SAINT REBEL started out under the moniker of KOLEN and went on to win some prices in their native Denmark. ‘The Battle Of Sinners & Saints’ is their debut. They are said to meditate on a man’s struggle to achieve a balance between his saint and rebel sides and they want to convey it without patronising their listeners, with gusto to kick ass and without drenching it in emotional porn. ‘Always Alone’ brings to mind PEARL JAM mixed with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE with the latter especially felt within the third quarter of the song and the former’s influence being felt throughout the first half of the album in bigger degree. The sound is gritty mostly thanks to ragged feel of the vocals. With ‘Once We Were Two’ it still stays within the echo of more classical sound of the genre, and Arena Rock of old.

Even though I’ve started with outlining their intention, which seems serious, there’s a lot of fun to be had with this, it’s like wipe out the miserable, grungy dust from PEARL JAM or ALICE IN CHAINS, keep the darker tone of the guitars and you get SAINT REBEL. ‘Halo’ has some nice atmospheric intro with a slight schizoid feel before it lunges with menace and chugging riffs into what is a truly ferocious song with some reference to melodic metalcore. ‘The Dying Child’ is your balladic moment and it doesn’t disappoint, a very beautiful one with some good show of a guitar solo, the vocals again prove themselves to be really good (not to mention capable of being diverse), but so are the skills on the offer. The metalcore leanings are best shown within two last songs and lend themselves to be appealing to fans in and away from the ‘home sound’ of hard rock with the grunge nostalgia included in the package for a good measure and mixed well. A good, solid and enjoyable album, a debut to be proud of.
