Album Review

When they met in 2007 they’re all complete strangers but faster than light they grew together to a cohesive unity that is now THE RABID WHOLE. Over the course of one year they’re working hard on their first full-length, entitled ‘Autraumation’ self-released in 2008. In the following time the band build a reputation with their engaging and compelling live performances and lured by the success many labels soon knocked on their door. The band ended up on Canadian brand Synthetic Sounds and this year besides working on their second instalment sees the re-mastered re-issue of their debut.

‘All The Same’ opens the album with tickling synth loops and before you know it you’re getting tugged into a tearing circle of raging, soaring guitars, propelling drum blasts and the greatly diversified vocal delivery of singer Andreas Weiss who’s just as well capable of soulful, clean lines as he is with turning his instrument into a ferocious weapon. The striking lack of guitars marks the first ‘phase’ of the next track which is ‘Harder To Be True’ but a bubbling tension is taking hold soon atop the clear-cut and forceful drum patterns that steadily fights its way towards the surface and breaks through at the beginning of the chorus and manifests in a mental mix up of the scissoring riffs and Andreas’s screaming desperation.

The menacing aura of ‘The Strings Inside’ unfolds quickly within the first disquieting notes of the string synth work opening the tune just an instant later to be complemented by Post Punk-ish or classic Goth Rock styled guitar lines before the literally infernal breaks loose upon your ears dishing out insanely hard drum kicks and riffs until all of a sudden everything reverts back to the nightmarish ambience infused section from before. Andreas shares vocal duties on this track with Sheenah. ‘Tell Me Lies’ allows no respite for the listener for the guitars are pounding against your eardrums at a constant level throughout the track. It’s a song that’s spewing energy and strong feelings and all are unleashed on you so you better are prepared for a full blast. The closing ‘Evidence of the Fall’ is in some way like a pendulum swinging between the poles of brooding darkness and unyielding harshness all wrapped up inside a package of elaborated drumming and seasoned guitar works.

THE RABID WHOLE are a fairly unknown band over here in Europe as far as I know but I think it’s about time that they become more known over here as this is a really talented four-piece that has serious skills in producing a high-octane hybrid of Rock and electronics that nobody who’s heard it once will soon forget it.
