Album Review

The first thing anyone would here from the German trio called TESTSIEGER was the self-released double CD ‘Testsieger Gold - 20 Volltreffer’ (2004). In 2006, they would win Germany’s highest remunerated newcomers contest “New Sensation”. 3 years later, they’re going to release the results of their previous efforts with the second album ‘Laguna Fantasia’.

The first proper track of the album ‘Neue Welt’ with its retro attitude and the way the lyrics are presented somewhat reminded me of WELLE:ERDBALL. The fragmented words are a critical argument with a society succumbed to stagnation and drowned in dreariness. Musically, the song also offers to dance to speedy drum beats enveloped by gloomy atmospheres. I heard the lyrics of ‘Normal?’ and the first thing I thought was that maybe the lyricist ought to have his mental stability check. But just as before, a deeper look behind the façade quickly showed that these words are the constructions of a clever mind and a good observer of his environment! For the first time, you can hear live drums now which add more energy and dynamics to the sound. Most of the songs on the album retain a high pace. The only exception is ‘Goodbye Rock’ that keeps a soft mid-tempo and evokes a jazzy and lounge-like atmosphere that came a bit unexpected for me to say the least.

In summary, TESTSIEGER have created an album with relatively simplistic song structures with pop attitude. That might not sound like much at first, because you can get something like that almost everywhere in the music industry nowadays. But the cunning lyrics are what sets this trio apart from many others and makes their music worth checking out.
