Album Review

Danish PITCHBLACK were formed back in 2003 and they released their debut album ‘Designed to Dislike’ in 2007. Now they are back with their second album and are hoping for an international career. And in order to accomplish that they hired a professional criminal photographer to create a controversial cover photo of the album, and they filled us up with bullshit of how artistic it is, as the “body is a symbol for the evil”. To tell you the truth I like the cover of the album. But please, spare me the philosophical sermon - it is obvious it was created for publicity reasons only.

As far it concerns their music, they play 21st century hard, uncompromising Death Metal with brilliant compositions, with at times fast tempo riffs and astonishing bridges. Like so many bands of the genre they are pissed off with the world we are living in but they have the music means to express it clearly and distinctively. For example let’s take ‘Don’t make me mad’. It is one of the few songs that I know to use so many times the word “fuck” and at the same time is able to eloquently express something. If one wants to classify their music it could be a SEPULTURA-like Death Metal. The aggression of the album is superb and the down-from-the sewer-vocals have a reason to be included in it.

Some of the other songs that stood out for me are ‘Replacing God’ for its wrath, ‘You’re Fucking below Me’ and ‘Bandido’ not only for their heavy tone but also for the rebellion and anger that hide inside them, ‘One Day We’ll Break’em’ for the deceivingly ballad-esque aspects of it, ‘Revenge (...Injustice for All)’ which is a counter-voice of the famous ‘And Justice for All’ of METALLICA and ‘I Return’ and ‘Promise of a Dead Man’ which show the Thrash Metal fury of the band. There isn’t a single song that I dislike from ‘The Devilty’. Their Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal influences are intertwined here in order to give us a must-have album.
