Tim Synistr (vocals / lyrics and Mel Butler (bass / drum machine, synths, songwriter) from The Scarlet Hour
THE SCARLET HOUR are one of the North East’s most promising bands - a duo who are quickly cutting a swath through the alternative scene, with an Industrial Electro-Goth sound that is highly danceable, juxtaposed against lyrics that remind us we are about two seconds to midnight on the Doomsday clock. Tim Synistr provides vocals with Mel Butler on bass. As a live act, they are an entertaining watch. Their striking red, black and white aesthetic, combined with Mel’s traditional Goth / Post Punk elegance and Tim’s enchanting stage presence is winning them fans every time they play live. Their first album ‘Warning’s has been highly sought after - especially the vinyl edition and their latest video ‘Torment’ is racking up those views on YouTube. I had the pleasure of chatting with Mel and Tim over Zoom one Sunday afternoon, about their creative process, their forthcoming gigs at Corrosion Fest in Morecambe and Leodis Requiem in Leeds and how their fans helped them to produce their debut album. (For context, I had already sent them a list of questions that I was likely to ask.)

Emma Nylén (vocals) from Emmon
EMMON, whose real name is Emma Nylén, is a Swedish electronic music artist. She gained prominence in the mid-2000s with her unique blend of Synth-Pop, Electro, and New Wave influences. EMMON’s music is characterized by catchy melodies, pulsating beats, and nostalgic synth sounds reminiscent of the 1980s electronic music scene. She has released several albums and EPs, showcasing her talent for crafting infectious electro-pop tunes with a modern twist. EMMON is known for her charismatic stage presence and has garnered a dedicated fan base both in Sweden and internationally. She is to release new single at the end of the March and I’m impatiently waiting to see her performance live in Leipzig during E-Only Festival, but before that happens, I asked her a few questions about her music and artistic way.

Rodney Orpheus (vocals, synths, drum machines) from The Cassandra Complex
Good news from THE CASSANDRA COMPLEX! The band around Rodney Orpheus will be going on tour again after a long time, and the new album ‘Death & Sex ’will be released on March 8. As the title suggests, it’s a re-recording of the album ‘Sex & Death’ from 1993. Seven tracks appear in an awesome and surprising new sound! The album features the original founding members Rodney Orpheus and Andy Booth (guitar), with long time additional members Chris Haskett (HENRY ROLLINS BAND, DAVID BOWIE) on guitar and Mera Roberts (FAITH AND THE MUSE, BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL) on cello, as well as the new member Brent Heinze (PROBE 7) on keyboards. I had the opportunity to talk to Rodney Orpheus about it.

Ben Christo (vocals and guitar) and Adam Hart (bass guitar) from Diamond Black
I first saw DIAMOND BLACK when they were on tour with LORD OF THE LOST in summer 2023, amidst the LORD OF THE LOST fever that appeared to be gripping the nation. The venue - Brudenell Social Club in Leeds - was packed full and the temperature was akin to that of a blast furnace. The anticipation was building so much that the atmosphere was almost electrifying like the moments before a storm… then, the first act, DIAMOND BLACK, appeared on stage. I knew absolutely zero about them, except they were British. There is always that consideration that the support band will be boring and everyone will be just killing time waiting for the main attraction and - oh boy was I wrong! The minute DIAMOND BLACK, fronted by the very charismatic Ben Christo, appeared on stage, they owned it. Ben’s dynamic vocals pierced the room like a cruise missile, accompanied by Adam Hart on bass and Jan-Vincent Velazco (PENDRAGON, GUS G) on drums.
