System of a Down - “Wake up the Souls” Tour

SYSTEM OF A DOWN put on their only Germany show in mid-April in Cologne this year. The exclusive performance of the pioneers of alternative metal on the 13th April is to remind of the attempted genocide on Armenians by the Ottoman Empire a hundred years ago. The “Wake up the Souls” tour wants to oppose ignorance with an unmistakable voice. It starts off in London's Wembley arena and reaches its peak with the first ever performance of the band on Republic Square in Yerevan.

The Cologne show gives fans the opportunity to experience one of the most variable, experimental and successful bands of the modern rock scene live. Since their foundation in 1998, SYSTEM OF A DOWN have released five records and sold more than 31 million of them, they have won a Grammy and count over 21 million fans worldwide. SYSTEM OF A DOWN returned on the world's stages in 2011 after a five years break. After numerous solo projects of individual band members, the comeback of the Armenian-American formation of beat fireworks, lashing riff attacks and highly artistic individualism excited all their fans equally.

Already since the mid-90s does the California-based band coin significantly the stylistic development of hard rock. No other band moves so virtuosic and congenially between heavy metal, punk rock, Hardcore and alternative rock. With their wild mix of staccato riff volley and elegiac-psychedelic sequences they created a style for which the music world created the term ''alternative metal''. Numerous bands have followed in System of a Down's footsteps ever since. SYSTEM OF A DOWN still remains unique as the Armenian descendants merge their space-consuming music additionally with folkloristic elements of their homeland. Another unique characteristic offers their political agitation. Their lyrics condemn social issues, political failures, mass media and historic atrocities. The upcoming tour reveals how much the band stands for civil courage and social commitment: an angry, brave adventure against the act of forgetting. The precisely formulated goal: the end of the oppression of ethnic groups, minorities and nations.

Their volatile musical-lyrical mix created a solid, big fan base for the singer/ keyboarder Serj Tankian, guitarist singer Daron Malakian, bassist Shavarsh ''Shavo'' Odadijan and drummer John Dolmayan from the beginning. Ever since, the self-titled debut reached platinum status in the US in 1998. Three of the four following records ‘Toxicity’(2001), ‘Steal this Album!’(2002), ‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’(both 2005) reached position one in the Billboard charts. Their records also reached frequently high positions in England, Australia, Germany, Canada and Switzerland. Singles like ‘Chop Suey!’, ‘Aerials’ or ‘B.Y.O.B’ entered the higher rank positions despite their breath-taking harshness. At the end of 2005, SYSTEM OF A DOWN took an “unlimited creativity break” which was used in the most productive ways. Tankian released five highly thrilling solo records and started the political platform for action ‘Axis of Justice’ with the RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello. Malakian and Dolmayan worked on their project ‘Scars on Broadway’. Two label deals and a comic distributor offered additional free spaces.
