Review Flash

With his latest album 'Post Tropical', JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW abandons his image of a conventional singer/ songwriter and begins to run another, quite distinct path with his music. It is rather difficult to classify his sounds into a specific genre, at best they remind of a combination of electro, pop and symphony orchestra music. Now and then instrumental interludes are used to simulate nature sounds such as raindrops or waves. His music therefore leaves a fairly exotic impression compared to the music on his debut album.

For a male singer, his so-called falsetto voice is surprisingly high and delicate, he seems to reach the upper pitch effortlessly. However, in some parts it collides with the drum structures being very present in some of the songs and therefore appears too flimsy. To some extent, the airy harmonies and melody structures tend to devolve into shallowness or even vacuity which gives the music a random effect. Nevertheless there are tracks which are suitable to his voice and show good musical qualities, as for example 'Cavalier', 'Post Tropical' and 'Glacier'.

Conclusion: As a whole, the musical turnaround of JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW is apart from few good songs in my opinion only moderately successful compared to his debut album. In any case, his music is always good for a surprise and we can be curious about the stations of his musical endeavor he is going to lead us to.
