EP Review

After CRYO's second full-length offering 'Hidden Aggression' took a, say, surprisingly poppy direction in parts, underscoring Martin Rudefelt's unwillingness to stick to a specific genre, he's veering into different waters again on his upcoming EP release 'Beyond'. This time around, he's taking a conceptual route and the title 'Beyond' is a good hint where he's headed. 'First Light' is the starting point of the story where the fear of the unknown is being contained in a few sustained notes that surround Rudefelt's voice like a soft current. Inside the track he's taking on the position of the narrator whose portrayals are interrupted by machine beats and samples of radio transmissions. It does a seamless transition into 'Escape Velocity', which is an instrumental piece focusing on variations of a theme. This meaning heavy industrial structures processed in various ways. So after we've left the Earth's gravity behind, this means there's actually none for us for an infinite amount of time. 'Zero-G' is the next part of the journey into the unknown.

It centres on the crew's thoughts about what may be lying ahead, about what is going to be discovered. All this packed into into a slightly danceable, but moreover atmospheric old-school track that benefits a lot of Martin's pervasive vocal performance. 'Event Horizon' is reduced to the max. By putting the multi-layered and very club-friendly rhythm patterns into the limelight it is on one hand a feast for the club-goers and on the other hand prove of a rapid move forward within the conceptual world the EP builds. 'Singularity' is quite the contrary on a musical level, its patterns being edgy and noisy. It's delivering evidence of a world that's in decay; the material world the protagonists have lived in. Time becomes meaningless and everything's transformed to energy. In a way it's equal to some beliefs concerning what happens after we die. 'Beyond' is the end, the unthinkable, where the laws of physics are being turned upside-down.

As such it's more than logical to give it a proper sonic equivalent. It is less a track than a sound collage with bits of melodies, distant voices and eerie sounds that only slowly are filled with a simple structure that is bound to disintegrate eventually in the chaos. A remix of 'Singularity' completes the new release. It's giving the track a rather straight and altogether poppier face. Well, well a nice collection of songs we got here thematically tied together by the great beyond. It's recommended to listen to from front to back to see the golden thread. Luckily, each of the songs also works on its own.
