A flyleaf is the blank page at the beginning of a book, the page, where you can write down a dedication or a message for someone and that is, what the songs should be explains singer Lacey Mosley: “Small personal messages, providing for a short moment of clarity, before the actual story begins”. The album has already been released in 2005 in the US. The European edition contains two additional bonus tracks.
Don’t bash me for that, but on some songs Lacey almost sounds like Avril Lavigne. But unlike this pop girlie, she has a much more convertible voice, than the before mentioned person. She likes to change between various different vocal styles, sometimes all in one song. The first one ‘I’m so sick’ already proves that to the fullest. Screams like no male singer could have done better alternate with clean, almost fragile and restrained chants, which turn to a powerful chorus in the end.
Powerful is also an attribute, you can apply on most of the songs, regardless of their rather short length. They rock the shit out of you. There are lots of sudatory power songs like ‘Perfect’ is one. The rhythm a bit faster and much more demanding and here we go. I also like the multi-layered guitar work on this track. The overall guitar work is different from other rock bands in my opinion. There’s still this spirit for experimentation. The eagerness to try out something new and that is something I really like. Between all this, there’s also time for some calmer moments and the regular track list concludes with such a moment. ‘So I thought’ is the name of that track. The guitars are very restrained, more acoustic than rock, but…not the whole time as the chorus displays much power again, but it still is the “calmest” track on the album.
Additionally, you can find two acoustic versions of the tracks ‘All around me’ and ‘Fully alive’.
