Album Review

‘Vodka Bear Matreshka’ is the first release of young Russian band ON WAVE, inspired by life in their homeland, the smell of railway stations, old factories and pristine nature, they want to succeed over many of their genre colleagues…

What gets to one’s attention first with ‘Double Click’ the firs track of the EP, is the unusually good drum and guitar work, which stays on a constant level throughout all the seven tracks of the EP. Here and there, some electronic elements seem to have found their way into the music as well, like during some drum passages on the before mentioned ‘Double Click’ that culminates in rocking chorus; or in ‘What Angel Seen’ as a subtle synth layer in the background. That song swims in Dark wave waters most of the time, frisky drum parts included; and becomes a dark rocking piece in the later course. ‘Solo’ starts right off with the full instrumental set and surprises with a nice guitar solo in its first seconds. Being only about 30 seconds long, ‘Matreshka’ is rather to be seen as a small interlude, before ‘Be my Killer’ goes right through the ceiling and is over as fast as it began. ‘Vodka Kosovo’ continues to wilder in the gloomy realms of Wave, but with a fair touch of desperation and a short lyrical reminisce to NIRVANA’s ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’. The last song, simply titled ‘Track’ is the instrumental outro with sundry electronic influences.

Musically, this is impressing for the first release of a band, but there’s a big flaw that tempers the listening pleaser and that is the chant. Not that it was overall bad; it absolutely fits to the music, but half of the time, you can’t understand what he’s singing; and that’s a point, the singer really has to work on for the next release.
