Album Review

In last year’s late August, the Russian formation ON WAVE with ‘Vodka Bear Matreshka’ released a first EP with which they wanted to succeed over many of their genre peers. The New Year had just started when they came out with another EP ‘Special Thanks’.

What wasn’t that evident on the last EP was the electronic elements inside each track which now come to light more often as you can hear clearly on the intro sequence of the opening track ‘Autumn’, yet they are always equally balanced with the rest of the instruments, so a cohesive ensemble is created. The melancholy being latent already during the verse parts as a very low set of sustained tones, pierces through the barriers shortly thereafter in the instrumental middle-section, right there’s no chorus, and is offering a top-class riff as well. The aforementioned cohesive balance of electronics and organic parts is being set back in favour of a purely electronic orientation for ‘Promoted and Sold’ which, despite its barely 2.5 minutes knows to convince with nicely crafted beats and sequences to the indeed uncommon vocal style of Mihail. Clean Indie Rock comes down the alley again with ‘Bushido’, displaying a coarser structure with gritty accents added to the sound.

No doubts about it, the guys are consequent and refined their style since ‘Vodka Bear Matreshka’; everything sounds tighter and more spot on. Time for a full album I’d say.
