Album Review

After years of trying, searching members and experimenting, MUTINY WITHIN managed to record their debut record with the youngest member being 18 years of age and the singer having come from England to join the band. In 2002, the band was formed by Bassist Andrew Jacobs in New Jersey and at that time functioned as a CHILDREN OF BODOM cover band.

The influences are unmistakable; ‘Awake’ begins with a small, atmospheric intro and then veers towards a technical and melodic orientated metal song, including fast and shredding guitar parts as well as clean, powerful vocals. The beginning of ‘Images’ is underlined by keyboard elements and vocalist Chris shows his variety in singing, providing deep and rather high clean vocals as well as some screamed elements. Somehow, the guitar solo section in the middle reminded me of typical Gothenburg melodic death metal. ‘Falling Forever’ continues in the same manner and ‘Year of Affliction’ begins with a neat piano melody as an intro. In general, the used elements and phrases are of a quite good musical quality, showing a certain technical demand.

‘Forsaken’ starts as well with a piano-driven melody and then veers towards a relatively slow and emotional song. In contrary to this, the next one, ‘Lethean’ is endued with speed-orientated and shredding guitar riffs, still without losing the melodic intention. Also, in this song, some rather unusual harmonies seem to be used in the keyboard section. ‘Oblivion’ does not make an exception concerning the general structure and composition, whilst ‘Undone’ begins a bit hard rock orientated. ‘Suffocate’ starts very heavy and thrashing, but unfortunately does not continue in that, since I would especially have desired some more about-face concerning the speed and heaviness, as the potential for this is surely given. ‘Reflection’ then remarks a nice ending for this album, continuing the focused path.

As for all new and upcoming bands, also for MUTINY WITHIN the saying goes that they surely possess capability, but need to concentrate on trademarks that make them outstanding. The vocals are indeed rather special, but Melodic Death Metal is nowadays a widely spread sector today with lots of similar sounding bands. Yet no one is mistaken by giving this band a try.
