8th October 2014
Die Happy - acoustic - & Support: Nick & June

2014 is a special year for DIE HAPPY. Right in time for the 20th band anniversary, they are back with a new album, ‘Everlove’. After a rock tour in spring and many festival appearances in summer, autumn brings the band back in an unplugged surrounding. Front woman Marta of course convinced once more with her wonderful voice… aptly dressed in elegant black. The audience in Münster was excited!

Nick & June

Before DIE HAPPY would entered he stage, the young duo NICK & JUNE opened the evening. “Where languid pop meets melancholic folk, where the city shines with polaroid charm, somewhere between “home” and “homesick”, where Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall” lives around the corner and quotes Schiller – there begins the journey of NICK & JUNE”. Their first single ‘Little Things’ already spread a certain easiness and optimism. In spring 2011, the duo worked, supported by Udo Rinklin (Die Happy, Philipp Poisel), on their first studio album, containing eleven sensitive songs. NICK & JUNE present good music combined with intelligent and deep lyrics in English, transporting lots of emotions. In 2012, the band played about 100 shows. The first album ‘Flavor & Sin’ finally was released in September 2013. NICK & JUNE is Nick Wolf (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, percussion) and June Kalass (vocals, percussion, guitar, banjo, piano, harmonica, melodica, glockenspiel). http://nickandjune.com / https://www.facebook.com/nickandjune

Music & Performance
The stage was already packed with instruments on DIE HAPPY and the duo from Nuremberg had only little space in front, where the bass drum – with a plush cat on – and the rest of the instruments were placed. NICK & JUNE as supporting act were chosen by DIE HAPPY themselves and when they entered the stage, they at first sight seemed like shy students. But then, they started the show and convinced me big time with their multi-instrumentalism and great voices, perfectly harmonizing. Equipped with acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica and many other instruments, the dui presented wonderful songs. As a very new one, also one song they wrote for a new movie, ‘Charleen macht Schluss’, entering the cinemas soon. ‘Annie Hall’, was dedicated to movie doyen Woody Allen. The little set also contained a cover version, ‘Sally Cinnamon’ from STONE ROSES. 35 minutes passed very fast and I must say that the duo really impressed me. I’ll have an eye on them on future, that’s for sure!

Die Happy

DIE HAPPY are amongst Germany’s busiest bands! Several albums and one “Unplugged” record have been released by the band around singer Marta Jandová since their inception in 2001. The single ‘Supersonic Speed’ made it into the Top 50 of the German single charts in 2001. Their long-player, aptly titled ‘Six’, was released in April 2008, and as far as reactions from the press and fans go, it’s one of their best works to date. 2009 saw the release of their band retrospective ‘Most Wanted’ but a new album would follow in 2010 with ‘Red Box’. The band’s newest release is ‘Everlove’, out in February 2014. DIE HAPPY is Marta Jandová (vocals), Thorsten Mewes (guitar), Ralph Rieker (bass) and Jürgen Stiehle (drums). For the acoustic shows, the band gathered some more musicians around them: Tayfun Schulzke (percussions), Lutz Möller (piano) and Peter Keller (acoustic guitar). http://www.diehappy.de / https://www.facebook.com/DieHappyOfficial

Music & Performance
The following break was mainly for removing the support act’s instruments from stage that was already filled with DIE HAPPY’s equipment. Besides, it was aptly decorated with big shade lamps, sheepskins, and red barstools. The band finally entered the stage along to a fiery acoustic intro, elegantly dressed in black suits (except the piano man wearing white) and last but not least, Marta in an elegant but also sexy black dress appeared on stage, kicking off with ‘Like a Flower’. Right from the start there was a very close connection between all band members, they were making jokes, little stories were told and there was always a close connection to the audience. Marta also remembered their last show in Münster, when they were playing at the city festival and a big thunder storm went down with lots of rain and lightning. But people stayed to celebrate with the band, whose crew obviously thought, “wow, they are still playing” while the band was sure that they would be told when they need to stop because of the weather. At the and anyone was happy to survive, they said with a smile.

But besides those little stories and jokes, there was a band in best mood, delivering a diversified set of old and new songs, wrapped in an unusual musical dress. On stage, there was a stool for every band member and most of them were doing just fine with sitting and playing their instruments but Marta just couldn’t sit still at all during the whole show. She was almost dancing on the thingy, swinging, even standing on it or just jumping down to walk on stage to quench the thirst to move, depending on which song would be played. The audience was really exciting and going along with clapping and singing. DIE HAPPY don’t just unplug the instruments and play little acoustic versions, they have fun, joke and stuff. A very special moment came up with the song ‘I Could Die Happy’ that was written by Marta for her little daughter Marie and where you can hear her joy of being a mother with every note.

On ‘Goodbye’ the mood had reached a peak with the entire audience dancing and coming closer to the stage. Some encores followed and finally the evening ended and memories of a very special concert will remain.
