Album Review

DEIED is one of the projects / bands of n1n0 and Din-Tah Æon (MELANCULIA and AEON SABLE among others) formed in 2007 and up till now they have released 12 (!) albums and EP’s. So it is easily understood that ‘Tales of Sodenliah’ comes out from a rather rich recording tradition. I also suspect that these albums also work as reigns on their creativity and vision. This album is a concept one. Among Huxley’s ‘The Brave New World’ and Orwell’s ‘1984’, it is certain that the former was to describe today’s reality more accurately than the latter. The fields of genetics and epigenetics open new possibilities for better and/or for worse. And DEIED set out a voyage, seemingly to an imaginary Sodenliah which is at the same time an operating theatre where n1n0 holds the scalpel and tries to find the necessary personal answers dressed with the veil of humanity. In order to achieve it the band puts together a superbly rich Electro which seems to have its basis on Metal structures and forms whilst n1n0 has a subtle theatrical voice and knows where and how to use it.

The ‘Intro + The Trip’ open the CD brilliantly with a celebratory description of Neil Armstrong’s mission to the Moon in order to jump into an upbeat dose of Industrial. It is a combination that has nothing “heroic” expected from the mission itself, instead it is harrowing and “dirty” mission that leads to death. ‘A Shell Full Of Scars’ opens with an almost synth-pop aspect and the light tune with the haunting vocals of n1n0 acquires something angry and wicked. Actually the “wicked” is the word that describes best this album and the way n1n0’s voice manages to twist and stretch the possibilities hidden within the songs. For that the band runs through the 80’s and DEPECHE MODE till the 00’s and the BABYLON ZOO. And of course the striking songs don’t end up with the two I mentioned. ‘Animanivor’ and ‘Lightmare’ are striking the former having a more Industrial tone whilst the latter has a more mainstream electro sound. ‘Transmigration’ is influenced by progressive gothic rock, melodic and melancholic as well while ‘Terra’ keeps something from the breadth (and the drums) found in ELOY. All in all it is an album whose strength lies in the process of amalgamation of different styles, industrial, EBM, progressive rock, Goth and dance beats.

This album signifies a major breakthrough for the DEIED. ‘Tales of Sodenliah’ is a brilliant combination of inspiration, music, technical skills and vocals that puts to shame many well-known bands. A wicked album for sure!
