Album Review

Italian trio A RAINY DAY IN BERGEN started out in 2006 as UNDERSCORE and back in April they’ve released their self-titled debut album. It certainly carries something from New Wave, but in an utterly modern way, or not just modern, the way to describe it better is – predominantly their own way. And although it also feels close to Pop-Rock, unlike so much of it, their music actually has a fresh substance, a nice depth to it. The keyboards and piano especially stand out as they evoke the mood superbly and the vocal keeps one’s attention throughout. The prevalent mood of the album of course is of melancholy, but not so in suffocating, melodramatic or self-pitying manner – dark but not depressive, there’s enough light and zest to prevent that.

‘Struggling For Breath’ faintly brought to mind MUSE within the vocal as in contrast of the PLACEBO’s Molko reference it sometimes stirs up. This song has some wonderfully epic passages that rescue it from momentary falling into the Indie Rock clichés it visits, which would have made it into one of the weakest songs otherwise. ‘Grey Haze’ feels ruggedly intense song, with great build up of atmosphere that makes it one of the more dramatic songs. Having said that, most of the album does retain a fine sense of dramatic momentum, pleasantly without that aspect being overwhelming. ‘A Thousand Universes’ firmly establishes the feeling that their choice to concentrate on piano and synths and ditch the typical guitars is a great one to have made.

A RAINY DAY IN BERGEN prove themselves with this debut to be a band worth to be kept an eye out for as they show a hell lot of promise. The description of “an unusual phenomenon of today's music scene” especially holds for the genres they touch upon – they do stand out from the mold. An impressive and wonderful debut!
