Title: No Bull (DVD)
Artist: AC/DC
Genre: Rock
Release Date: 5th September 2008
Label: Sony/BMG

Introduction

I know it’s not the long anticipated new album of these Rock’n’Roll icons, but a life sign after a long time. ‘No Bull’ centres upon a re-release of a concert recorded in 1996 at Madrid’s bullfight arena “De Toros De Las Ventas” during the “Ballbreaker” Tour. Coming back to the album, I just read I will be called ‘Black Ice’ and released in October.

Line-up

Brian Johnson - Vocals

Cliff Williams - Bass
Phil Rudd - Drums

Detailed Review

To be honest, I’ve never attended any AC/DC concert so far so please be indulgent to me; and after watching this I realized that I indeed missed something. So let’s start at the beginning with a trajectory shot over the masses and masses of people at the arena to the huge stage, where a demolition ball hangs down from a crane, that all over sudden, starts to move to tear down the wall built up in the background and the first faces you see are Angus, properly dressed in a school uniform and Brian Johnson with his mandatory cap and starts with ‘Back in Black’ from the same-titled album from 1980 and it becomes clear right from the start who are the main actors here on stage. Man, those guys weren’t the youngest anymore, when this was recorded, but they’re running from on side to the stage to another as if they’re still in their 20s and that deserves a big “Respect” from my side.

These two guys are first class entertainers and know how to control the audience and drive them wild. Well, ok that wasn’t necessary anymore because the people already were completely nuts only because of their appearance. After ‘Shot Down in Flames’ and ‘The Razor’s Edge’ burner ‘Thunderstruck’ were celebrated like hell, it was time for a song “For all the beautiful Women here”, according to Brian Johnson, ‘Girls Got Rhythm’ was next and not only the ladies screamed at the top of their voices. A very special performance act, at least for me, followed when it was time for the ‘Boogie Man’ to come but obviously no one was afraid of him anymore.

The stage mostly was drenched in blue light for it but the best thing was Angus’ strip performance, I mean I was speechless. But just was hilarious and at the end he revealed his white shorts with Madrid’s national flag on his “back part” and afterwards he just delivered one awesome solo. But with ‘Hells Bells’ came the next surprise. They let down a huge bell with the band logo on it and Brian was running in from the left to hang upside down the rope in the next moment. Then the set went on with ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and the blues-tinted ‘The Jack’ to which the audience loudly sang along. ‘Rock’n’Roll ain’t Noise Pollution’ preludes with an extra long solo by Angus, before it comes down on the audience with full throttle, while the stage was covered in cascades of multi-coloured spotlights.

You won’t believe it, but “Rosie” paid them a visit as well; literally in the shape of a larger than life rubber doll on a pedestal behind the band. What these guys put up for one show is really impressing. Following this was a little ‘T.N.T’ for the masses and then came ‘Let There Be Rock’ and after some minutes of pretty “normal” AC/DC stage acting you could see some backstage footage with Angus who then re-appeared in another part of the arena, carried by a security man through the crowd, playing his guitar. Later he would end up on a height-adjustable platform for a solo play to return to the stage later where he was carried by Johnson several times across the stage. With AC/DC’s probably most famous song we then took a trip on the ‘Highway To Hell’ before ‘For Those About To Rock’ ended a show with many surprises.

I can’t tell you much about the extras, accompanying the DVD as these promotional discs only contained the concert. But “only” isn’t correct. The concert recording is great, even though there were some pixels here and there, but maybe they’re not that much disturbing and they’ll most probably not being included on the real DVD I suppose. The stereo sound here was good and you could spot many details and for our surround fanatics there’s also a 5.1 audio track.
