Album Review

Though the mastermind David K and Chris Pohl’s Far Section label were in touch for quite a long time with various contributions to samplers; cut forward to 2008, the project, now grown to a four-piece releases its debut ‘No Paradise’.

The track ‘Picture Book ‘starts ‘No Paradise’ with a marching drum sequence which re-appears at several points of the rack. The vocals are typically distorted; here they are polyphonic as well. Couldn’t spot any specialties here except for the extreme dance appeal of the song; the second track ‘Rebirth’ even is a bit faster but still keeps an eye on the dance floors. A variation in the vocal distortion becomes audible and I think I’ve heard that effect somewhere before. ‘Hostile’ drops the tempo and dark melodies sound from the speakers before David’s vocals come in; not so much distortion his time “Come on now, pull the trigger”. ‘We are flourished’ sounds a little retro from its sequences and drum sounds. The mood is much more sinister than before. Subsequently to the quite rhythmic accentuated verses, the chorus is packed with melody. A high frequency noise announces the start of ‘Not Real’ until driving sequences start to lead into another genuine club track with distorted drums and vocals. The ‘Love Circuit Switch’ continues the dark theme of the beginning of ‘Hostage’ and mostly stays in down-tempo regions garnered with various atmospherics.

‘Infected’ and ‘Terrabyte’ cover two different sound spectrums; the first one is shuffling through its duration and comes up with some bit-crushing effects while the latter one will please the ones who want to shake a leg again; fast, dark and distorted as usual. After ‘The worst Day’ and ‘Longing for Silence’ played through the electro standard program, it’s time for the title track ‘No Paradise’ but to be honest it’s no revelation either. Ok, there are some rhythm changes but in the end it’s just a generic track with a few mistuned melodies. ‘2nd Class Human’ ends this symphony with a statement about “a broken world, cold as ice” wrapped inside a conglomerate of mid-tempo beats and guess what? Dark melodies!

I know I shouldn’t bother about any of these promo texts but on the other hand you should at least be able to come near what is being promised, but “revolutionize a genre” sounds different. The production is good, yet I can’t hear anything that would distinguish the project from all the other electro formations out there.
