Welcome to ‘Silent Green’, the upcoming new album of the German project ART NOIR that is erratically getting its music out to the people since 1996 and lastly has met with a multitude of positive reactions to its 2002 release ‘Flügel’. But back now to the new record! Door open creakingly and low-key steps getting heard walking through a ‘Dark Temple’ which is also the name of the first track. The atmosphere of the scenery keeps growing in thickness and some time steely industrial rhythms emerge from the darkness giving you the listener something tangible. Second in line is the title track already, brewing off with deep, ominous bass drones and whispers from which soon more clearly definable rhythms branch out. But it strikes one right away that this isn’t everything that’s to come here and like a response nebulous billows of impervious atmospheres rise up to envelope your senses to the fullest and clear female vocals lull you in.
‘Asphyxia’ turns the fabric around and begins with moody environments with rough rhythm attachments appearing first a ‘few’ seconds into the song. ‘Mental’ adds to the solely electronic sculptures a good breath of neo-classical elements taking you into past times and at one point makes you think of being in some kind of odd fun fair. ‘Brother of Sleep’ is a very dark lullaby that chiefly is getting its attraction from the fluid interaction of the atmospherics with the mesmerizing female vocals. “I’m sure there’s going to be more than one unpleasant surprise before we’re done” I wouldn’t say that ‘Take the Blue Pill’ is such a kind of surprise. I find it more surprising that the regular album tracklist is ended with an upbeat track like this that in addition to it oozes a saturnine atmosphere. Can’t say that I’ve heard the name ART NOIR thus far but you should have if you’re into sonically stunning ambient music. Keep an ear out for ‘Silent Green’!
