Album Review

The band consists of CyLeW (vocals and guitars), Mathieu Zub (guitars), Arnaud Bascuñana (bass, backing vocals) and Kriss Kilong (drums, backing vocals). The recording of the debut album ‘Not so sleeping, not so beauty’ started mid December 2007 and was self-released in the June 2008. At the moment, CYLEW is working on the second album and I look forward to hear how it will turn out to be. For me, this is an album filled with songs that are easy to listen to, at first you may think that they are not that complicated but once you start reading the lyrics you learn that they deal with a lot of emotions and feelings that I can relate to and understand.

When I started to listen to ‘Not So Sleeping, Not so Beauty’, I had trouble with putting my finger on what it all reminded me of but then it hit me that the sound and the way CYLEW sings reminds me some of the Irish band THE CRANBERRIES and since I was into them during the 90´s that might explain some of why I like this album so much. Of course there are more than that to this album; the songs are like a journey with sadness, loneliness and death but also with love and hope that in the end we will meet again. ‘Message’ is a slow guitar intro taking you by the hand and leading you into a dark, tragic and beautiful landscape, I like the melody and the simple yet strong lyrics that CYLEW manages to sing with so much feeling, I like the atmosphere that it all creates.

‘Familiar’ quickly became a favourite, I like the speed and energy in this cool song that is way too short! Just as I have begun to dance around to it it’s time to hit repeat. Interesting that this song is so different from what I have heard this far, I am pleased to be surprised with the rougher sounding chorus that easily get stuck on my mind. ‘Endlessly’ starts slow and simple but is a very emotional and strong song, I like the way CYLEW manages to transform so much feeling into her voice. I like how the song builds up and let loose in the angry chorus that fits so well with the rest in this song. ‘Dying’ is a bit different from the rest with cool beat and rhythm; it begins with almost whispering vocals that then change and becomes really powerful during the intense chorus.
