Album Review

Beginning of last year I received a copy of the DEADSTAR demo recording ‘Moonlight’ which in my opinion lacked a few crucial things. Now the man behind the project Francois Pouvreau has offered a new record entitled ‘The H.O.O.K. K.I.L.L.E.R.’. That title is referring to the ‘Candyman’ horror movie series; starring Tony Todd as the tall boogeyman. The opening ‘Saviour Of The City’ has the heavens opening their gates to release storm and rain and we hear the man himself making a deadly promise. Afterwards, textures of orchestral darkness and choirs unfold to give birth to a sinister atmosphere. ‘Birth Of A Legend’ tells how it all started with a music sample I heard somewhere else before, but which lends the perfect backdrop to the speech sample.

‘Cabrini Green’ is the first track to be equipped with a propelling rhythm, sounding very metallic to me. ‘Ruthie Jane’s Apartment’ is a beautiful tune that caresses the soul with thick atmospheres, harp sprinkles, acoustic guitar and majestic choirs.
The album feels like having some kind of evolving plot, that is, a developing story like in the movies, which makes it even more interesting to listen to. But far more important is that Francois managed to craft some really diverse works with synths, sounds film samples etc. A major leap forward for him as a musician and something to build up on for the next release he might be working on already.
