Album Review

THE HOUSE OF THE LAST LANTERN is a rather new Gothic Rock band hailing from Ukraine, formed in 2008 and ‘Web of Feelings’ is their debut album. Truth be told, I’d be very disappointed if after such a great band name, inspired by Meyrink’s ‘Golem’, the EP turned out to be just some plain stuff. But fortunately this is not the case. They have a very THE SISTERS OF MERCY aesthetics in their sound and their vocals as well. So, from the beginning of the EP if you like the early Goth / Goth Rock / Post Punk it is certain that you’ll enjoy this one as well. ‘Delusional Insanity’ and ‘Just dance’ follow the aforementioned pattern whilst the ‘Hermit’ has a more light industrial tone. Their influence from the LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is apparent in ‘Blood by Blood’ which is probably the best song in this EP. The worst one is the homonymous ‘The Web Of Feelings’ which, though it lingers among the familiar paths of Gothic rock it lacks strength, tension and I would have liked for the singer to take some breaths so he wouldn’t feel rushed at some points. But overall it is a promising band and I’m looking forward to see its progress in the future.
