Album Review

The trajectory of Luke Ritchie’s musical career has been slow but steady: an English Literature student at the University of York in the late 90s, Luke’s band at the time, Sevenball, won the local Battle of the Bands competition and a degree of critical acclaim regionally. While most acts sink into obscurity in the wake of such achievements, Ritchie found himself courted by Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland before subsequently sinking into obscurity when nothing came of the discussions and Sevenball disbanded amicably after one album.

The protracted silence doesn’t mean that Ritchie’s not been keeping himself busy, and since the band split, he’s been honing his craft and chiselling away at the material that now constitutes his debut solo release. ‘The Water’s Edge’ may be acoustic and in places ponderous but it’s also got a darker, brooding side and hints at a rock sensibility, occasionally reminiscent of Alice in Chains’ ‘Jar of Flies’. Then again, ‘Shanty’ skiffles along with a full-on rockin’ vibe that sits somewhere between Led Zep and Soundgarden (a band Ritchie is a professed fan of), and the overall result is an album that’s mature and possesses a vintage quality that makes it rather appealing.
