Album Review

2ND CIVILIZATION was founded in 1986 as a “fun” project. It is funny, but something hardly changed since then. I have to be honest and say, that I have nothing to compare with, since I haven’t heard their previous works, but for a band that exists over 25 years they sound pretty amateur. With this their album ‘Report from the Dark’ sounds quite naïve, sincere and pure. Somehow “dark” music by men in that age and with that level of experience has its own trends. Most of times such works sound like the musicians don’t really get the whole idea of the dark scene, but still try to keep on doing inside of its frames following its basic rules. It isn’t enough to use some standard key-elements, if you’re not comfortable with them. And if you’re not, it is easy to hear it in intonations and music itself: There are attempts, desire and drive for making a successful EBM-album, which haven’t found its release in this work.

First of all the album sounds really like from the 80-s, it is hard to imagine it was created last years. Lyrically, musically and vocally - it’s a time machine! Even the last track, called ‘Report from the future’ sounds rather like Blast from the past. The musicians were inspired by their compatriots FRONT 242, whom 2ND CIVILIZATION used to cover in the past. Add to this DEPECHE MODE and KRAFTWERK and the jigsaw is done. Looking for tendencies at the modern scene it is more important to find the motivation, not the recipes the other use. And the best what can be learned from young musicians today is longing to be individual, to show them off without fear to be too pop or ridiculous and without trying to copy somebody’s emotions. Ironical lyrics were the best decision for the ‘Report’, as well as fancy guitar, which you can hear from time to time.

As for electronics, which is the biggest part of the ‘Report’, they are quite poor. Electronic scene is in real crisis today because of the oversupply of “musicians” who found the easy ways to “create”. So normally the electronic album today has to sound really unusual and innovative to win attention of the listeners. 2ND CIVILIZATION sound unusually cheerful and funny, but these are strange characteristics for an EBM-album.
