It was 2003 when the preliminary line-up of POOLSTAR* finally found together. Back then, they still had no bass player so they relied on a groove box they named “Ming-Li” for the time being. In November 2004, the first album ‘Losing Gravity’ was released through their own label GOM Records. The following years would see the band breaking out in extensive live activities, but somewhere in-between, they manage to release the EP ‘Blow Your Mind Away’ in 2005, including a spectacular video clip. Seemingly endless months later, the second, eponymous album sees the light of day and finally, in spring 2007 they would find a real bassist who would join their band and stay with them ever since. With ‘4’, the band is now releasing their third full-length.
The four-piece wastes absolutely no time on the opening track ‘I Killed Someone’. It’s introduced with a sampled tape in high-speed rewind whose speed almost equals the driving riffs that appear moments later and are complemented with powerful drums that blow up in your face. Add to it a rebellious, but somehow also longing voice and you have all it takes to make this song an instant live and club favourite. The second track ‘Inside Of You’ is yet another blast for the ears with lyrics that are an example of the heady attributes of love. On ‘My Rapture’, we’re going into darker, down-tempo territory and get welcomed by another, very high-pitched facet in Töff’s vocals. Some will find this just unnerving and rather stick to the ones in the powerful chorus; others will just fall in love with that, because of its undoubtedly unique nature.
’4’ is pure energy in almost every minute and you can feel the dedication and passion of the musicians who made it in every single one of them, plus they must’ve had an awesome lot of fun recording this disc. Anyway, the album’s going to be a big hit in the guitar-oriented independent scene and beyond and even will draw people who’ve never heard of POOLSTAR* before.
