Album Review
PLASTIC PEOPLE is Sebastien Ficagna’s project, after a demo full of electro-rock he’s recently released an album ‘Pink Narcisius’. French rock cabaret with a punk attitude where accordion, electric and folk guitars meet each other in an extravagant affair washed with New/Dark and even Cold Wave. You’ll also find that he’s covered song from David Lynch’s film Eraserhead - ‘In Heaven’ and also a cover of Winston Tong- TUXEDOMOON song ‘In A Manner Of Speaking’. Both are done in a dramatic and cocky manner, the second will prod you to some foot tapping indeed, the piano interlacing it is quite wonderful.
‘Nothing Is Eternal’ incorporates guitar and accordion superbly into a catchy hook, the melody is just attention-grabbing, the extravagance is here but somewhat tuned down so the dramatic element doesn’t detract from the song as in many of its album’s companions. ‘My Boyfriend Alien’ exercises ironic approach and works so well with the dissonant post-punk-ish feel of the song. ‘My Picture’ and closing ‘This Is The End’ are the album’s more melancholy creations, though with the former when the dramatic moment steps in, it spoils it somehow at a first listen, though when you hear the next part interlaced with a bit of anger, it does make sense. Regardless, the extravagance is sometimes superfluous and to the detriment of the music but it’s not obviously an easy thing to balance right and this happens in a lesser degree so it’s not something that would tarnish the overall impression of the album which is of a collection of a great, out of the ordinary and entertaining music.
