With his 18th studio album, Bruce Springsteen delivers not only one of his best albums but also, I suspect, is ready to pack his suitcase in case of Rick Santorum’s Presidential election! When it comes to Rock music Bruce Springsteen knows a thing or two above the rest of his peers and he is never tired of delivering them. Above all, what is Rock without its sense of rebellion against the status quo? Should the artist just shut up because oh-dear-it-is-so-last-year for the artist to stand next in line with his audience in their concerns, fears, and hopes for the future?
In ‘Wrecking Ball’ you’ll find songs with political associations and affiliations, speaking about not only the economical depression but also some other aspects of modern life. And though the lyrics might at times be a bit depressing, it is up to Springsteen’s vocals to arouse hope. The LP has also a tone of the Southern Rock, which is fitting, as his characters in the songs look like they came out of Steinbeck’s ‘The Grapes Of Wrath’ and they are lingering in uncertainty about their future whilst they are seeking for a job. The chasm between the American Dream and the reality which was concealed during the “good times” cannot remain under the carpet anymore. And Springsteen continues the good ole tradition of protesting and clinging to some forms of spirituality towards the end of ‘Wrecking Ball’. And it surely adds to the quality of this release the fact that Springsteen is not willing to preach anything.
