Album Review

‘Klondike’ is the first full length album from the German based duo [de:ad:cibel]. A quick glimpse on their website learns us that behind the name [DE:AD:CIBEL] hides Daniel Galda and Armin Kuester, who both already earned recognition before in bands like DAS ICH, SKORBUT, KALTE FARBEN... so definitely not any beginners at start here. And that we're not dealing with any beginners here is already clear from the start as [DE:AD:CIBEL] deliver us a good produced and mature sounding album.

The album takes of with the obligatory intro piece, ‘hotel lux’, before the real thing starts. And with ‘Jerusalem Syndrom’, they open really strong, a song reminding me at times of the old CALVA Y NADA and DAS ICH, which isn't that remarkable at all if you know that Daniel used to be live keyboarder with DAS ICH for many years. But to be clear, the song is definitely having its own identity and up to date sound and is no cheap copy of the above bands. With ‘One of 47’, they still continue pretty strong, a song some of you already might know as it already appeared on a few compilations and on the band's first EP release ‘Oone of 47 / Architecture’. But unfortunately the band is not really able to keep up this high quality level and deliver a few mediocre songs after ‘One of 47’ and ‘Jerusalem Syndrom’. Songs like ‘Selektionsfunktion’ or ‘Too tired to consume’ didn't exactly leave me breathless and soon start to become repetitive and boring because of the rather uninspiring lyrics and way of singing.

Of course it's not a sin to have one or 2 songs on an album that are not of the same high quality, but the problem with this album is that the band seems unable to get the quality back up again after their promising start. Good songs like the EBM alike ‘Architecture’ or ‘B.I.I.D.’ kind of get lost between the rest of the album and just pass away without leaving any impression and are already forgotten by the time the next one starts. It actually takes up to ‘Monster train’ before [DE:AD:CIBEL] comes above water again and deliver us a real potential club smasher, combining heavy bass lines and EBM structures with more modern club sounds. ‘Geteert und gefedert’ is another song like one in a dozen, but with ‘Human product’ they end the album like they started it, strong!

So to summarize, this album left me with some mixed feelings, strong songs like ‘Jerusalem Syndrom’ or ‘Monster Train’ unfortunately too often get alternated with mediocre songs... too many weaks to make it a really good album in my opinion, but nonetheless an interesting release with a few really good songs on there. For those into heavy bass lines (FUNKER VOGT, FLA…), EBM structures and some more complex experimentations, I can really recommend this one, for all others, first give it a listen before buying it as it might not be your cup of tea.
