Album Review

With his second full-length album, James Geist, delves into his major influences - you can call them SKINNY PUPPY - and the Electro-Industrial scene of 80’s and 90’s. And he knows very well to evoke a certain amount not only of charm but also of empathy towards his musical personae. Spooky sounds, Dark Electro, and a sense of fatalism create here a Giger-ish landscape painted retro - futuristically. ‘Blacklight Magick’ could easily be the soundtrack of ‘Prometheus’ movie if only it were directed by Roger Corman - as it has a Gothic element attached to it - and the focus weren’t the Aliens but a more personalised hell.

As it is, the album playfully builds on the theatrical atmosphere and delivers an interesting albeit limited (due to the few original tracks included here) insight into the Electro tradition. From the ‘Cemetery Sound’ to the ‘Haunted’ we watch the fall of the hero in 5 tracks which could be seen as a unity in their gradual decomposing of the identity dressed of course with ironic undertones and low-beat rhythms. The remixes offer a more straightforward glimpse of dancing adrenaline. Among the best moments on that front are the upbeat remixes of ‘Blacklight Magick’ by PORTION CONTROL and ‘Satanas Ex Machina’ from PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF EUROPE which has a more ”dirty” Industrial feeling. Certainly the album distinguishes itself from the usual Dark Electro / Industrial albums not only in its peculiar sense of humour but also of its darkness.
