Review Flash

It has been four years since my ears had the enormous joy of witnessing the epic and majestic sounds that are the trademark of Seattle-based Epic Metal knights of GREYHAWK. If I remember correctly, I guess I reviewed every piece of music these guys did put out since they assembled in 2016. The first EP ‘Ride Out’ still had a lot of MANOWAR worshipping when it comes to the pure vibe of the release, the first full-length ‘Keepers Of The Flame’ already showed a band that slowly but surely did find their very own sound and voice. This was further solidified with the next EP ‘Call Of The Hawk’ which included instant classics like ‘Steelbound’ and the majestic, odd and kinda cheesy ‘Demon Star’ (which I deeply adore because in my honest opinion, good Metal has to have plenty of pathos). I know that I may cause a gigantic shitstorm in the scene with what I am going to say now but this new release ‘Thunderheart’ might give Priest a run for their money. The melodies go hard as the literal fuck, the riffs on this make me want to raise a mighty sword over my head and the overall high energy arrangements give you the balls to face the armies of hell all by yourself.

The vocals of Rev Taylor have a timbre that resembles that of VISIGOTH’s Jake Rogers, the big difference is that Taylor’s approach is more theatrical and a bit broader than that of Rogers. I am fours tracks in and everything was awesome, the title track ‘Thunderheart’ is a real battle hymn that showcases the skills of all involved musicians and ‘Rock & Roll City’ is a song that literally wants you to kill a few cold ones. ‘Steadfast’ is battle hymn number two and a song that really shows some nice high-pitched screams by the Rev himself (nice). Without talking about every track here I can safely state that this is among the best releases of 2024 so far and I expect this to be among a lot of albums of the year lists at the end of this year. The only little thing to nag about is that I can barely make out Darin “Brick” Wall’s bass, I guess that is a problem many bands have to deal with when mixing bass and two guitars (I will call it my “strings theory”). Check this out and thank me later!

Conclusion: Music to kill dragons and storm castles too.
