EP Review

Dessert time in electronic music! Following the release of LIQUID DIVINE’s latest album ‘Autophobia’ in late 2009, the duo puts out an EP featuring one of the album’s stand-out tracks featuring prominent guest vocals of Frank Spinath. The EP kicks off with the album version of the track, which is already quite a club compatible track on its own, regardless of the evident emphasis on cool ambient washes, and Frank’s vocals are hovering weightlessly amidst the sounds. The second track is the AQUALITE remix of ‘Planet Zoo’, having undergone a straight rework with a touch of dark house music. Very moody kind of take on the original track in comparison! Jan DeWulf aka DISKONNEKTED is known for his electrifying, layered dance tracks and ‘Sojourner’ received such a treatment, keeping with the density of the original’s atmosphere but adding a cool, varied club beat section. While we’re at it, the next one is the club mix of the title track.

There, the beat section has a little more crunchiness that should be working pretty well on the dance floor in conjunction with the DISKONNEKTED track. So, now we get to hear something new with ‘Die To Meet You’ as ‘Parasite Edit’. That track is the crystal essence of LIQUID DIVINE, offering that signature, processed melody fragments atop an interlocking structure of powerful break beats. Everything in that department sounds somewhat dirty. Perhaps, that is this version’s trademark, or it could be a hint on the new album, we’ll see. A surprise element comes with the use of an acoustic guitar. We know him as part of HAUJOBB, but here Dejan Samardzic delivers a solo rework of the two-faced ‘Want’. While on the original you felt like that ferry boat might not sink at all, like a tiny glimpse of hope, the remix sends you straight into the cold of a stormy sea. It’s radiating cold, the arrangement being more minimalist but that on the other hand has got a certain charm.

If you’re into IDM or electronica, the name might sound familiar to you, for all the others the name FLAQUE most likely won’t ring a bell. He’s the one behind the remix of ‘Comagirl’ that closes the EP. The track in its pure form is already utilising strong sonic imager. The voice of YREA does her fair share to completely take you away on a journey into a lost mind. Let me be honest. I’m not much of a fan of those releases containing mostly remixed material. Nevertheless, I’m giving a recommendation for this one, because these have turned out quite well in my opinion.
