Album Review

After over 200 shows amongst others in Italy or Croatia, as MARYLIN MANSON cover band, RICHARD CHRIST and his Bassist decided to create an outlet to surface their own, full sonic potential which they’re going to present now with their self-titled debut.

And they’re starting the album with an upfront rocking piece called ‘Eyes’ and the vocals not only sound a little bit like MARYLIN MANSON, they’ve a remarkable similarity to the one’s of the US shock rocker. The next one’s ‘The American Christ’ opening to a thumping rhythm which straightens up later just to revert back to its former self and that’s going to happen a few times over the course of the track. Driving in its essence I still think it’s the murderous, raw vocals in the chorus that give it its real drive. You think ‘Angel’ is going to be in a quite similar way? Wrong! After a fairly rocking start, melancholic melody clouds start to drift through the piece with a little assistance of fragile guitar parts only to lead to another rocking outburst later Kind of a contrast bath RICHARD CHRISTR are sending you through on this one.

‘Call me’ is a pretty electronic matter with a similar thumping beat as on certain parts of ‘The American Christ’ only that it’s not going to straighten up this time. Not that I would take off now but there’s indeed a certain weightlessness to the riff melodies and keys in ‘Space Glamour’ which actually sounds pretty much like it has some of its roots deep in the eighties; some of them in the Old-School EBM. ‘Depression’, a good mood description; also for the one pervading this track, actually! Rain’s pouring down from a dark sky and sinister wave-esque guitar lines in turns with sullen strings flicker through the air until an aggressive chorus erupts all its rage on the listeners. ‘Grey Day’ wraps up the album with a small number not using any streamlined E-Guitar but instead offers filigree acoustic stuff blended with densely layered atmospherics and quite retentive drumming.

RICHARD CHRIST have done a pretty diverse first album that has brutally rocking but also intensely calm moments to offer but the Marilyn Manson memorial sound in the vocals should be phased down for the next album if possible. Sounds a bit dependent!
