Review Flash

MANILLA ROAD is an American heavy metal band from Wichita, Kansas, founded by lead guitarist Mark “the Shark” Shelton (vocals and guitar). The roster changed a fucking lot in the last 38 years since the band was formed, between 1991 and 2000 the band went on hiatus with only one solo project of Shelton called CIRCUS MAXIMUS. The band’s discography consists of seventeen records the latest is the one I review right about now. ‘The blessed Curse & After the Muse’ is a two record epic which sounds very old-school but not forced in any way, that guy just cannot do it any other way.

The first CD ‘The Blessed Curse’ includes ten songs in typical MANILLA ROAD style (strange, appealing, old-school, catchy seventies style proto metal)and it is very difficult to point out a highlight among the songs because the whole first cd feels more like a total work of art. The second part called ‘After the Muse’ is somewhat more settled musically because in the last years the fans screamed for more ballads and acoustic numbers (Shelton does his thing but serves the fans too). ‘After the Muse’ is a little short with only six songs but hey that’s bickering on a high lever (first world problems if you know what I mean). On this part I can point out ‘All Hallows Eve’ as a highlight.

Conclusion: If you like strange seventies rock/ proto metal which is a bit proggy here and there you are indeed in for a treat, just give MANILLA ROAD a chance.
