‘In the Lab’ is the first release of the Roman project MMMF, founded in December 2007. They received a lot of positive reactions on their MySpace page and so decided to produce this EP because the people wanted to hear some more.
The first track ‘Let the music begin’ is a genuine down-tempo ambient track that, with its wider layers and flute like melodies, conjures a compact urban atmosphere. ‘Clapping Lips’ can be labelled as the exact opposite, as its very much raising the pace, whereas the amount of melodies is reduced to a minimum and only is revealed in shorter sequence lines. The rhythm quite moves into an IDM direction, however I’m missing some more diversity, it’s pretty much the same pattern over and over again and that, after a while, appears very monotonous, but maybe that was the intention. ‘Screamhead’ is balancing the books again by beginning with a short piano line, some textures and a nice rhythm to which some experimental sequences are tied. The mentioned rhythm has a small twist. In the later course it just transforms into a distorted monster. From my point of view ‘The Cripple’ is the most minimalist song here. Reminds a bit of 8bit music with a robotic sample (voice) in the background and surely it has its charm, but it’s not my cup of tea. On ‘Escape’, I especially like the drums; gives the song a bit of live feeling, while various sequences are running over it. The last track ‘Sea of Sins’ is something to dream again. You can hear the murmuring of the waves and airy synths and piano lines.
‘In The Lab’ is a good start for the small project. Not everything is perfect on that first release. The recording quality is not yet optimal and one or two arrangements could be a bit more varied in my opinion, but this project’s still at the beginning and you have to give them time to develop.
