Album Review

MECHANICAL ANGEL is the brainchild of Eric de la Mer from Atlanta, who is already making music since the age of 16 and a one man project, where Eric handles all the duties that normally require an entire band. The first audible result is the self-titled EP we now have here.

Eric names, amongst others, the NINE INCH NAILS as a source of influence for his music and the first song ‘Mother Magdalene’ indeed reminds a bit of Trent Reznor & Co but without being a mere copycat. The song is drifting forward with a mixture of electronic beats and guitars. Eric also integrates arrangements, influenced by the Eastern culture in his songs, which is giving them a truly unique sound and flair. Eric has a wee-sounding full yet deep voice, adding a dark touch to his music. ‘A Field of Statues’ begins very organic with the mentioned Easter arrangements, this time complemented by a corresponding slow rhythm, turning into an electronic one afterwards. Especially I love the chorus here. His sounds so brittle and fragile here, it’s just amazing. ‘Invocation’ rocks straight forward with slicing riffs and a faster pace. The drums sound much more organic on this one and also here it’s the distinct vocal style that intrigues me. ‘Footprints in the Sand’ is an extremely varied piece of music, swinging between the poles of oriental darkness and powerful rock parts.

The production quality is descent for a demo. The sounds could have been a bit clearer but I guess this comes with time. Hopefully Eric keeps working hard, because if he does I’m sure a label will knock on his door someday. I’m curious about the further development of his sound…
