Album Review

MY RUIN after line-up shuffles and changes crystallised to a two-member band, singer Tairrie B and her husband Mick Murphy, who has shown his talents as a multi-instrumentalist. Their new sixth album ‘Ghost and Good Stories’ is hailed by many as the culmination of their strengths and a challenge to the genre where a female presence is marginal. It is evident indeed that Tairrie stands her ground and matches her male colleagues in raw power and strength, at times even reminiscent of Zack de la Rocha from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE with her ferocity and rebellious attitude. On the other hand Tairrie’s vocal approach is yielded in the same manner in all of the album and it’s a shame that her voice was not shown in more varied ways to fully appreciate it, not to mention that its smoky and dark quality merits to stand out even more.

One ends up feeling that the whole album is one extended song due to the music also, not just due to the vocal. Their lyrics are well written and challenging – be it religion and the world, also superficial attitudes, compliance in objectification, they express the differing views and criticisms  with strength and conviction as they seek to establish something better out of the ashes, the personal ones bear beauty and depth. Another disadvantage is to be found here, the lyrics get drowned out behind the homogeneity and the excessive rough singing whilst they’d have deserved to be in the forefront as they are interesting, have a lot to say with an unique bend and could positively inspire especially their young fans. Whilst it’s impressive that Mick Murphy accompanied his wife in all aspects but the far too unified vision lessens the impact of the album, as a whole it would have gained from more differing experiences, more influences (apart from the stated PANTERA and BLACK SABBATH, SLIPKNOT and KORN also come to mind) and layered it some more. A good album, though its potentials were not realised as much as they could have been.
