Album Review

OZRIC TENTACLES come from an English county not far away from where I live, interestingly then, they landed on my reviewing “table”. They play instrumental composition of psychedelic / space rock nature and having been spawned from a meeting at Stonehenge Free Festival in 1983 had been playing it ever since in different variations of line up. In lieu of those long years there is twenty five albums to their name. This wasn’t the only project the members are/were involved in, there’s also their side project EAT STATIC & NODENS ICTUS, not to mention running of a record label. And some might suggest that they are a proof of an underground band managing to sell well, over the years they’ve sold more than a million copies of their records.

The album opens with ‘Attack Of The Vapours’, a number with some rave and dub elements, and also a tribal feel. Soon it slips into psychedelia. From the elements I’ll pick in ‘Lemon Kush’ the way it comes and folds on itself. For ‘Flying Machines’ the music was really fitting with its reproduction of something steely, it has this “cold” feeling with a impression of movement. ‘Knurl’ has a coolness to it. ‘Paper Monkeys’ - great title - is a rockier piece. The most enjoyed track is for me the last, ‘Air City’, it’s very chilled out, and there is this very dreamy smoothness within that piece. The album is well produced, enjoyable, though one really has to be in a mood for it. Also if you’re looking for innovativeness, there is not much of that to be found. It’s quite a standard psychedelic instrumental odyssey.
