Out of nowhere COMBICHRIST, the “new” project of ICON OF COIL member Andy LaPlegua appeared on the scenery and confronted the audience with a much harder-edged sound specifically made for the dance floors of this world and it completely worked out. Today, COMBICHRIST is a constant in the club scene and a welcomed guest in every DJ’s playlist. In 2008, LaPlegua prepares for the next strike with the Frozen EP:
And the recipe hasn’t changed at all. Surely over the years, the distortion level has decreased, still the tracks are as energetic as they were on the first release and true club grenades without a doubt, starting with the title track ‘Sent to Destroy’, unleashing a true fireworks of pummelling beats onto the dance floors to make them quake. The other ingredients are well-known and obviously still effective; some distorted sequences and bass lines here and shouted vocals there. The simple message here is “Your God has sent us to destroy”. The following ‘The Kill’ follows right in the footsteps of its predecessor, only that it’s an instrumental track this time with a slight injection of melody. The ‘Prince of E-Ville’ decreases the pace, but intensives and strengthens the lower frequencies and indulges in the more noisy sides of electronic music. The rest of the EP is divided into 3 remixes each of ‘Sent to Destroy’ and ‘Prince of E-Ville’ and now I know again, why I’m not a fan of remixes, because most remixes don’t add anything remarkably new to the original and except for the BABYLAND remix of ‘Prince of E-Ville’ which really gives the sound a fresh new costume and drive with more organic drums and melody, all the other ones, apart from their qualities as club bombs, are nothing special.
Another hot candidate for the heavy rotation list of the clubs by COMBICHRIST; he picks up, where he left off and though it’s nothing new or innovative, I think it’s a good implementation of a not so new recipe, it will provide for full dance floors again.
