Album Review

Formed in 2006 by former American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry, the band already rose to fame with the release of their self-titled debut album which spawned seven successful singles for the band. Now, preceded by the single ‘No Surprise’ the second DAUGHTRY album ‘Leave This Town ‘ is about to touch down on 24th July 2009.

Its opener ‘You Don’t Belong’ builds pressure from the moment it starts to erupt in hard rocking sections that would suit any Nu-Metal album juxtaposing it to calmer parts with more cautious vocals by Chris Daughtry. Next track is the first single of the album ‘No Surprise’ and now you can start throwing stones at me if you want but if Chad Kroeger himself had sung this nobody would hear a difference to a regular NICKELBACK track. If you ask me his influence on the songwriting process for this track was way too big. Luckily the other songs don’t display such obvious similarities to other bands and so a track like ‘Life after You’, despite his participation (surprisingly) sounds entirely different being an emotional ballad with really strong vocal parts and poignant melodies.

‘What I Meant to Say’ is quite a generic straightened rock song, extremely radio compatible and thus, a candidate for the next single release! Further songs on the album are pending between generally rocking and more upbeat stuff and balladry tunes and covers a broad variety of moods. With that it should be able to please any fan of catchy mainstream rock music to the fullest. It’s no challenging stuff but good for listening in the car or on your MP3 Player and that is already more than you could say about other stuff that is released these days.
