Columbia Club, Berlin, Germany
23rd November 2007
Atreyu, Still Remains and Engel

Arriving there, already a lot of people were waiting to see ATREYU perform on stage. Looking into the faces, almost only hardcore-fans were there this night which was pretty funny thinking of ENGEL playing at the concert, too. All in all, we were looking forward to watch an awesome concert. Could it be any different when ATREYU are playing?

ENGEL

In 2006, the band started to win a lot of prices and soon afterwards, they released their debut album ‘Absolute Design’. Looking at the name ENGEL you could think that the band is from Germany but actually, they are from Gothenburg, Sweden. Members of the band already played in other bands, for example the guitarist Niclas Engelin played with GARDENIAN, IN FLAMES and PASSENGER.

Music
With a mix of heavy guitars and hard growls the music just perfectly matched to whole evening. They were much stronger than I though they would be but that’s what I thought the last time too because I couldn’t imagine a band named ENGEL being that forward but they were which was good. His voice is just awesome and the mood they deliver on stage was fantastic. They only performed for about 30 minutes which was really pity because if you ask me they could have played for even more hours.

Performance
Since the stage of the Columbia Club in Berlin is quite small, it isn’t easy for a band to put up a great performance but ENGEL really managed to be full of power and energy during that night in Berlin. I saw them at the DIMMU BORGIR concert a couple of weeks ago and liked them there already. It is fascinating how every member of the group can constantly be in motion without getting into the other ones way. The light was awful though and so, it wasn’t quite easy to set a good light on the band but by having that much energy and fun on stage nothing could stop ENGEL from having a great performance although the conditions were less than good.

STILL REMAINS

STILL REMAINS is a Metalcore band from Grand Rapids, Michigan, currently signed to Roadrunner Records. The band formed out of previous Grand Rapids based bands SHADES OF AMBER of Amber and UNITION. They combine both, heavy and melodic rock and metal in their song writing. They have just recorded acoustic versions of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS song ‘Creep’, as well as ‘Rivers of Babylon’ by BONEY M., and ‘Nutshell’ by ALICE IN CHAINS.

Music
STILL REMAINS are more the hardcore type of band which isn’t that bad because I do like hardcore from time to time but I thought their music wasn’t quite as mature as they wanted it to be. I saw a keyboard on stage but didn’t hear any keyboard sounds in the songs. The drums and guitars were ok but all in all not what I expected them to be.

Performance
After seeing ENGEL perform I had high expectations to that band and I have to say, they didn’t really achieve it. The singer had a lot of energy, true. The guitarist was moving around, true. But somehow I didn’t really feel that much going on on stage like I did before. All in all, their performance was ok but nothing special. At least, the light started getting better slowly.

ATREYU

ATREYU is a five member post-hardcore band from Orange County, California that formed in 1998. The band consists of vocalist Alex Varkatzas, guitarists Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel, bassist Marc McKnight and drummer and vocalist Brandon Saller. The band was originally named RETRIBUTION but later changed their name to ATREYU after the character from the fantasy movie “The Neverending Story” of the same name (suggested by a friend, Scott Lloyd)  when they found out that another band from Hemet, California had been using the name. http://www.atreyurock.com/

Music
They started off with one of my favourite songs: ‘Bleeding Mascara’ which is the opener on their album ‘The Curse’ as well. I took pictures at that time but from time to time I just forgot that because the music was just that great that I had to move. The music was structured so that they played songs from all their albums and not only of the new one which was great because I love their old stuff. After playing songs like ‘Right side of the bed’ or ‘The Crimson’ I was that happy that the only thing that was missing was their hymn ‘Lip Gloss and Black’ and that was the last song they played. The whole crowd just screamed the four words: “Live, Love, Burn, DIE!” In the end, we had a guitar solo going on which surprised me because I didn’t know that he could play that well. All in all, the music was fantastic, the sound finally became awesome and the songs they played were absolutely great!

Performance
There is one thing I have to say when I talk about the concert: WOW! The show they put up was just great. The whole band had a lot of energy and you could see the fun they had performing in front of the fans who were really partying to their music. Alex was always talking to us which gave a kind of we-are-all-one-big-family-feeling which was pretty nice because you usually don’t have that feeling going to a concert, especially in Berlin because everything is just that big. They didn’t have anything special going on like fire or any stuff like that but they still managed to put up one of the best shows I have ever seen in my whole life. It was just awesome. Especially the drummer went crazy. It was fantastic to see how much fun they had on stage and we definitely at least as much fun as they had.
