Album Review

Autumn is a perfect time for melancholic thoughts and dark romances. And, of course, if you are in this wonderful mood, you need some suitable music to listen. That's why many bands playing dark music are releasing their albums in this period. One of those bands is THE DARK UNSPOKEN coming straight from Germany. Their third album ‘Diode in your head?’ will be released on 15th October 2010.

In general the sound of their new album is quite pleasant, but unfortunately there is nothing new or extraordinary in it. Nowadays, lots of industrial / gothic / dark electro bands make the same music. Listening to THE DARK UNSPOKEN, the DejaVu feeling will never leave you. Let’s say that this album would be definitely popular in the year 2000, but today it brings nothing but the collection of overused sounds and ideas. Most songs on ‘Diode in your head?’ are in English. Considering music I would say that there are some really interesting compositions, but mostly all songs have the same structure and begin to sound boring after a minute or two. Also guitar could be mixed more properly almost in all songs.

Darkun’s voice nicely combines with all melodies, but sometimes vocals are drowning in the mix or deformed too much by distortion (sometimes vocoder). ‘Won't sell your will’ is a nice example of using vocoder in the wrong way. In this track you can hear only illegible mumbling instead of understanding words. The best song on his album is ‘Diode in your head?’, it has a really nice slow beginning which continues with quite interesting melody and catchy lyrics. Also listeners should pay attention to the song called ‘Buried In Wonderland’, it has truly beautiful lyrics and sounding which brings into that composition a little bit romantic, but still dark atmosphere.

As a conclusion, it could be said that ‘Diode in your head?’ sounds as a way forward from their previous work ‘Rotten memories’, but still a little bit obsolete for the year 2010. Of course, there are some songs that worth listeners attention, but they won't bring you the feeling of something fresh. If you are a fan of electro / industrial music you may listen THE DARK UNSPOKEN’s new album and make your own opinion about it.
