Album Review

‘Germany’s Next Death Metal’ may seem like a cliché title for DEBAUCHERY, who has been known to create their own special brew of “death rock” ever since their debut in 2003. It seems though, with every album, they tend to climb further and further into the death metal side of their music while following a pattern of bands like TORTURE KILLER or SIX FEET UNDER. As a result, compared to their last album, the music here may feel a bit more one sided to fans who are more use to diversity of hard rock for one part of the disc, and then some death metal set to rock influenced tunes like AC/DC or CHARMED CITY DEVILS. So, as a result, ‘Germany’s…’ is still full of plenty of groove and enjoyment, but also leaves a lot of room for desire for the more rock based bits.

There is a trace of the band’s former album work with the first track, ‘The Unbroken’, with a switching off the rough singing and harsh growls, and the introduction is just killer with all the grooves one could ever want. However, after this point, expect the music to sound like TOURTURE KILLER all the way through. The growls all sound just like Chris Barnes and the music is roughly based on the same repetitive - but catchy riffs - over and over without much take in trying to go for a complex music structure, such as involving more solos, bass lines, and varied drum patterns. One would think that due to DEBAUCHERY’S rock heritage they would make the music more diverse and energetic, just like the opening track, but for the most part everything just feels pretty bland. Tracks like ‘Genocide Overkill’ and ‘Zombie Blitzkrieg’ are pretty good at first, but after a while it just tends to get stale with how the riffs go over and over. ‘Animal Holocaust’ picks things up a bit with a bit of a thrash based pace, but the lyrics tend to dumb things down a bit, even for death metal. One would think that DEBAUCHERY would have at least been more creative with their ideas instead of just relying on a generic death rock style. One thing can be said that is decent about the death metal parts though: the high pitched attempts do not sound like pig squeals.

True to their standards, there is a cover track on this album; this time it’s ALICE COOPER. DEBAUCHERY do this glam rock hit justice with making it grim and dark and the death metal vocals decent enough (it’s no worse than SIX FEET UNDER doing their multitude of cover albums). Overall, older fans are going to be divided - they will either like the fact that the band that the group turned to death metal fully while keeping a hard rock sound for their instrumental, or others will be pissed they left the diversity of having both rock based cleans and death vocals. New fans will probably enjoy this if they’re into death rock n’ roll, but don’t expect much complexity or technical skill here. This is simple, rough, and catchy stuff, done death metal style.
