Album Review

The following band in the line up was FROZEN PLASMA. After the split of his very successful band NAMNAMBULU, Vasi Vallis founded FROZEN PLASMA in 2005 together with Felix Marc. The Debut Single ‘Hypocrite’ was released in November 2005, the first album ‘Artificial’ followed in April 2006 and the EP ‘Emphasize’ was released later in 2006. With the German-tongued single ‘Tanz die Revolution’ in late 2008 came a first harbinger for the upcoming second album and the just released ‘Earthling’ single is the last stop before ‘Monumentum’ will hit the shops in summer.

The instrumental opening ‘The Sighting’ envisions the imaginary spaceship’s venture into the Earth’s atmosphere for me and short before the song fades it touches ground.  The story of our centre piece ‘Earthling’ is told in retrospect after the otherworldly observer had a chance to get a clear perspective on mankind’s nature and the conclusions he’s eventually drawing are sad “And then I realize there is no peace of mind / Awake to see there is no remedy in sight” Unlike the previews single ‘Tanz die Revolution’ the newest appetizer for the upcoming second FROZEN PLASMA album ‘Monumentum’ emphasizes the more emotive and spherical side of the project’s work. Felix’s voice is surrounded by wide textures radiating a deep melancholy and also sadness that outstretches until its reaching the listener’s heart. The tempo of the piece is at a club-friendly rate and is structured pretty straight so it’s allowing to have a fair dance to it, still I’d rather sink into the melodic washes and moods of the track.

Now let’s have a look at some of the Earthling’ variations on the disc. The AQUALITE RMX is very suitable for club purposes employing stronger, layered rhythms. The spherical character of the original has disappeared completely while the basic mood is kept alive through the vocals. I feel the instrumental ‘Farewell Impressions’ version as being the counterpart of ‘The Sighting’ that transforms to music the last impressions the visitor before leaving the planet. The mood just feels different even though the track sounds like the original at first listen. But the last version titled ‘Desolate’ tops everything if you ask me. Dreamy piano lines strings and atmospherics and for good measure the beautiful voice of Lis van den Akker taking over vocal duties here. A brilliant ending!

I wasn’t much of a fan of ‘Tanz die Revolution’. I could never get used to the track really. ‘Earthling’ on the other hand matches my taste a 100%. Alone for the original and the ‘Desolate’ version this is already worth every cent.
