Album Review

In 2007, Peter Spilles - mastermind of PROJECT PITCHFORK - founded IMATEM and invited many well-known artists, amongst others, Der Graf (Unheilig) or Anke Hachfeld (miLú), to intonate vocals and contribute lyrics to the song’s he’s written. Only one year after the critically-acclaimed debut, he’s finished ‘Journey’…

With the words “Thank you for the invitation, to take part in a trip to somewhere we don’t know where it leads us” by Stefan Großmann, the ‘Journey’ can start with ‘Fiat Lux’. Vocally, Stefan always was compared to IMATTEM inventor Peter Spilles and ok, there might be a small similarity, yet I think one shouldn’t reduce him to a mere vocal clone. He does a good job on this track which, with its pummelling attitude, is best suited for heavy club rotation. Next stop is ‘Haven’, a place we all seek, a place where we are safe and nothing can do us any harm and who could be better to vocalize such a theme as Ronan Harris. His splendid voice becomes the centre of all attention and everything else, the staccato rhythm; and the spherical layers somehow become irrelevant. I haven’t had the chance of listening to the voice of Jay Smith yet, but frankly, it doesn’t knock my socks off; not bad but nothing to remember; goes for the song as well. The drums sound a bit cheap to my ears; I like the background melodies though. An uplifting spirit comes with ‘Conquer’ with Peter’s partner in crime Jinxy (Santa Hates You) on the microphone. It says “Nothing can stop me, I can conquer everything or more simply put: I choose my own destiny”. Her darker, a bit smoky voice is very appealing. The song itself is a bit harder (regarding the drums), a bit faster and the used sounds and melodies transport the feeling of the song very well. On we go with a nice, poppy track with casual dark overtones sung by Jan Borowski of REVOLUTION whose vocals maintain a strong vibe, while not neglecting the emotional side.

Further on with ‘Journey’, nope, no guest singer this time. ‘Journey’ is completely instrumental, a track to calm down and let your thoughts drift while airy synth layers and crystal sharp beats please your ears, but the next song comes up with yet another top class guest vocalist. Sven Friedrich is the one this time and as soon as his voice tunes in melancholy surrounds you again and varied strings and pads add their fair share to fortify the feeling. ‘All Ends’ with Nick, whose usual territory is the group LEGACY OF MUSIC, draws its variety out of the contrastive arranged parts with the modest verse parts on one; and the more challenging and more heavily and melodically constructed chorus. The interaction of both, together with Nick’s vocals, results in a marvellous piece of electronic music, you shouldn’t miss. SARA NOXX brings a feeling of longing into the game with her track ‘Down to the Sea’ and musically I do like this track very much, a crunchy beat, melodies, mirroring the mentioned sense perfectly, I just can’t get warm with her vocals on the track. I feel nothing when I listen to them, but the last track ‘No one’ makes it all up again, as you feel the hopelessness and despair when Peter Spilles recites his lyrics while widely layered atmospherics paint drab soundscapes and a massive beat provides a rhythmical sub font.

‘Journey’ is an odyssey through various sonic worlds, bound by only one theme, the journey, which appears in various form and with many faces, the search for a safe place and the often difficult way to get there in ‘Haven’ for example. Each one of the vocalists but its own distinct mark on the songs yet they all appear as a cohesive body of work in the end…
