Album Review

INCUBITE descends into the dark club scene like a pair of possessed Nosferatus to create their own symphonies of horror and terror. They are a Gothic / Industrial / Electro-Synth band from the Ruhr area in Germany that was founded in the 1990's. The band is made up of two Gothic-Industrial clad figures (Neill Oblivion and Miss Meow) that look like they just came out of a dark crypt somewhere in the underworld and appear to be true members of the undead vampire zombie league with bloody profiles and chains. INCUBITE’s new CD, ‘Toxicum’, is a deep vat of bloody melodies that lives up to its name ‘Toxicum’. In this case, it is anything but toxic. It ends up being a pleasurable mix of Industrial Gothic sounds and industrial beats.

The first song on the track seems to announce their coming with the lyrics, ”You people have been chosen to reveal our existence to the world!” with such a dramatic effect. It makes you aware of the hauntingly dark songs that will come after this. The next song ‘Judgment Day’ sort of shocks you into submission with its instantly hard and fast throbbing beats. The addition of a prayer in Latin makes it equally gloomy. This combination makes it perfectly danceable. The song ‘Deafening’ is exactly that, loud, with clanging industrial sounds and driven beats vibrating in an endless cycle of noise. The song ‘Glowstix, Neon & Blood’, starts out like something from a sci-fi movie sampler. True to the songs name, the beats and melodies in this song sound like a mixture of these biochemical components. The mix is electrifying! Torture to treasure on the dance floor! We are ready for a song like this. Now!

The following song, ‘Hell Instructor’, teaches you how to dance to descending beats that reverberate on the line that leads you into the dark abyss. Take me down there! I will go willingly! ‘Preparing Hatred’ is more like a short political statement about propaganda and war then a song so I took it as this. A verse on how to prepare for the hatred that is coming up in the next song which is aptly labelled, ‘Ich Hasse Dich’ (I Hate You). It starts out deep and dark then turns into a fast and driven beat with various samplings of German. The tune ‘Blasphemie’ debates about different ways to be blasphemous. It is decadent to say the least with its angled and quartered beats that rip open the seams of sin itself! The song ‘Muschitanz’ I do not wish to translate because of its obviously sexy and seductive nature. The song lives up to its title. The song ‘Toxicum (Ready to Exterminate)’ sounds out like a toxic sci-fi virus ready to take over the universe and exterminate all life. The CD title is named after this song which is extreme in its forceful and repetitive beats.

‘King of Beasts’ starts out with whispers then you hear the growl of a beast. The song continues with clanging industrial beats and computerized sounds that lead the listener down a path on a journey into a cryptic cyberspace that no one will ever return from. The next tune, ‘Rifle Corps’, sounds like a military artillery corps shooting and dancing in unison. Shoot me! Fire! One shot hits the listener with a death blow. The last, ‘WW3’ which I presume is World War 3, seems to be a quick sample of what ‘WW3’ might sound like and is a fitting end to this CD. We all have been a part of this Gothic Industrial war that has turned us all into mindless vampire zombies that willingly dance to and follow this band called INCUBITE!
