Album Review

THE OTHER, a band that describes itself as Horrorpunk, but fits perfectly well within the finest examples of Rock’n’Roll and Garage has returned with a new album, their fifth. And one thing is absolutely clear with these guys - they move away from all the psycho-tiresome stuff, the brutality of the world, and the cheaply written manifestos of debased Buddhism that dominate the mentality of so many bands. Instead they have invested in the fun part of life and the horror movies. Fast tempo songs (with ‘Ewigkeit’ being the slowest one) and uplifting mood at times in the strain of bands such as VOLBEAT characterise the band the best. The party here, the very Halloween mood, starts after the short intro of ‘The Devils You Know’.

Moreover if you purchase the limited edition of this release you also get a comic book that describes the solemn efforts of the band to take over the world after their impressive rising from the dead! As far as it concerns the songs some of the best moments here are surely ‘Skeletons in the Closet’, ‘Fright Night’, ‘Nice Day for a Funeral’, and the concept story that comes with the “Nightmare on Halloween’. It is enough to be mentioned here that ‘Phantom of the Opera’ is not the one you might expect; rather it is a punk-ish rock version of the story that throws some amounts of sing-along freshness to the old idea.

In short, ‘Devils You Know’ is a Rock’n’Roll contest of monsters battling for your own pleasure, a gesture that is more than welcomed. It is necessary and brilliant. Because there are plenty of times you just want to have a great day not only by listening to a CD but also at a gig.
