LOVE AMONGST RUINS is a project of Steve Hewitt (ex-PLACEBO). The connection to a bigger name could give some credit to the project, if needed. But Hewitt went a long way apart from his previous band and deserves to finally get separated from it. And best what he could've done for it is the album ‘Lose Your Way’.
The record is opened by a nice pair of hits as ‘Lose Your Way’ and ‘Modern War Song’. The title track is a great pop-piece, moving and electric. Due to his remarkable musical career Hewitt obviously has a great feel for hits. And so the first track gives a direction for the rest of the album, which is modern up-to-trends indie sound. The following ‘Modern War Song’ inspires in a social way, makes to think of the modern society and gives an impression on the modern world. Normally songs like this bring either anger or sadness. But in case of LOVE AMONGST RUINS the choice is the only – sadness and melancholy.
The whole album plays on one breath. Sometimes it seems to be so boring, so you wake up, realizing that you've listened to a good half of the album, but you have no recollections of it. In other times you get amazed but each piece, which makes this album whole. It is very easy to imagine any of the songs from this album somewhere in the middle of a Hollywood drama. Great grooving base of each song along with juicy drums and melancholic vocals of Steve Hewitt himself create a perfect album for those who joined the army of RADIOHEAD-lovers and is looking for suitable alternatives.
