Album Review

After ten years of existence it was finally time for the LETZTE INSTANZ to release a Best-Of album, but unlike other artists, who just put different songs from their released albums onto it, the guys of LETZTE INSTANZ decided to go a slightly different way and re-recorded the chosen tracks purely acoustic. How that sounds? Well, first of all you have to get used to the fact that no E-Guitars appear in the songs.

But without the use of that quite harsh instrument and due to the re-recording, the tracks show a fragility you wouldn’t have expected. I will start with some of the old songs first as I was very curious to hear Holly singing some of the tracks originally sung by Robin. A first glimpse of how that would sound, I could already experience live, when the band was on tour through churches in Germany to present the new album in a different ambience. Now I can say, that I like songs like ‘Kalter Glanz’ or ‘Für Immer und Ewig’ much more in their live versions than on CD More power, different ambience etc. A surprise comes with the cover version of David Bowie’s sole German song ‘Helden’ not my cup of tea to be honest, but the new song ‘Das weisse Lied’ is just awesome. A melancholic ballad, that benefits from the fragile string arrangements and Holly’s chant. Same with ‘Winter’, where the goose bumps are guaranteed. The stripped down version of ‘Ohne Dich’ sounds in my opinion much better, than it’s original.

Mission accomplished. ‘Das weisse Lied’ is much more than a simple “Best Of”. It is a tender re-interpretation of older and newer song, revealing another face of the band and it shows that they’re not limited to one style in particular.
