Album Review

In 1996, MUDVAYNE formed in a cellar in Peoria, the oldest city in Illinois. To make their vision of Nu Metal come true. The first EP ‘Kill, I Oughtta’ is only available at concerts. In 1999, they get signed to Epic Records and release their first album ‘L.D.50’, followed in 2002 by ‘The End of all things to come’. After two further albums, it’s now time to unleash ‘The New Game’.

The opener ‘Fish out of Water’ starts with a fast repetitive riff and short before this begins to get on my nerves the track unfolds with a scream and riff orgy. The drum parts deserve special attention as they’re constantly shifting their tempo and rhythm. With ‘Do What You Do’, it seems to go on calmer in the beginnings with acoustic guitar play and clean, soft vocals before it all turns to brooding anger vocal-wise; the harder guitar may add to it as well. The title track sets an extremely high pace and is nothing like its precursors. It is ruled by stark anger and Chad’s heart-piercing screams, on top of a flow of guitar and rhythm, go on and on penetrating your minds. Let’s get things into a calmer area with ‘A Cinderella Story’. Well, at least calm for a certain time, as the anger always finds a way to the surface and erupts in these trademark anger filled vocals, before the track ebbs and calms down again, only for a short moment. The drums in combination with the fierce riffing on ‘The Hate in Me’ makes your adrenaline levels go off the scale. It doesn’t give in the smallest fraction of a second until it leaves you exhausted. The album ends with a fair kick in the ass on ‘We the People’. Fast, and by the way extremely cool drum parts, tempo shifts and wailing guitars give you the rest.

Can’t compare this one to the ones before, but ‘The New Game’ definitely has some absolutely fantastic drum parts and the contrast between the screaming and clean vocals puts another layer of diversity on top. Good sound, good music, good album!
