Album Review

MYSTIGMA is a German band playing music that can be described as metal / rock with a hint of gothic rock and new metal. Let’s be honest, ‘Andagony’ is not a masterpiece. It’s not a talentless album; the tracks seem well-written and coherent. However, they all sound the same. There’s no soul in this music. It’s like a beautifully wrapped gift box, with lots of accessories and glitter but when you open it, it’s empty. The packaging is shiny but a little bit tacky. Shame, because there’s a lot of potential there. Even though some of the effects seem somehow “out of the blue” and the vocalist is terribly out of tune in places (‘Close to You’). The intros are cool and guitars sound quite powerful and vicious (‘I Steal Your Light’).

Personally, it seems to me that the guys just decided to have a band and then picked up bits and bobs to make things happen. But art is not just cutting and pasting. Art is when you create something new. They sound like they are capable of it, so I wish them all the best. Let’s hope their next album will show that they have made the transition from artisans to artists. Otherwise I’m afraid they may become one of too many anonymous bands played in crowded rock bars to entertain pool players.
